Kijiji: The New Craigslist in Town
Wednesday, July 11, 2007, by Eric

2007_07_Kijiji_la.jpgWith all those Is and Js in a row, it's hard to tell how eBay's new Craigslist-killer is spelled. So here it is real quick: Kijiji. And here it is real slow: K-i-j-i-j-i.

And real slow is an apt way of describing the flood of posts to this new (to the US), free online classifieds service. The LA housing section boasts only 13 apartments for rent, only 35 homes for sale. Plus an unfortunate lack of weirdos. (Give it time.)

This will NEVER be a true competitor to CraigsList. CL is too entrenched into every large & small urban area. Plus, that name? Kijiji??? Huh?

Much like Google will never be a true competitor to Yahoo. MySpace to Friendster. Wii to PlayStation.

if anyone cares, this is how it is pronounced:

KAH-GEE-GEE

#5 - I loved their song "Too Shy" :-P

I agree wont be a true competitor. those services mentioned by #4 had advantages and better usability plus # 3 is right the name is a big disadvatage from a branding point of view.

i agree, craigslist is universal. plus, theres not much you can improve about Craigslist. Kijiji can differeinte itself from CL by having accounts, like ebay does, so maybe it will end up less shady than CL.

Craigslist does rock

It's interesting though, CL could have made a killing ($$$) if it monetized its model with advertising sales - who knows, partner with google, etc but they didn't. Their classifieds (LA, SF, NY) are cheap.

it's quite altruistic.

Copy cats are trying to figure out a way to get enough eyeballs to benefit from advertising.

This name is quite, I don't know, I don' like it.

KAH-GEE-GEE

like the asian CL but not enough weirdo's just yet?

go figure.

"E-bay's craiglist killer" ? - doesn't Ebay own a big chunk of craigslist?

Guess who drives the market? Consumers in the younger demographics.

Guess what brands they go with? Whatever is new, hip, and different.

While kijiji may not be all that different yet, it still stands to gain ground on CL, which has been bombarded with spam listings.

As of this posting, KJ has 5 listings for "iphone," whereas CL has 763. If I wanted to sell an iphone with the least amount of competition, guess where I'd go...

Jason Burns: If you are trying to sell an iphone, would you go to the place with the least amount of viewers? Not sure that's the smart business decision...

By Brian at July 11, 2007 5:04 PM

Thanks, Brian, for giving us another great example of short-sightedness.

If you're selling an item, it doesn't matter how many 'viewers' a site has. You may be able to sell an item at a higher price on a site with fewer competing sellers.

OH! How could you! I went into the Kijiji site and started clicking around, and stumbled upon this:

http://losangeles.kijiji.com/c-Pets-Dogs-puppies-for-sale-AKC-Certified-Golden-Retrieve-W0QQAdIdZ17510149

That dog is so cute - I've never seen a creature stare that intently at a camera lens before. The pictures just made me want to cry. I hope someone can adopt it.
