And in Breaking Famima!! News

From Downtown LA we get this just in from a frantic emailer:

We know there are two Famima!! locations coming to downtown. The one at 6th and Olive is still unbuilt.

But this morning, I was on my way home from breakfast at the Pantry and took a peek at the 8th and Figueroa location...IT'S DONE!

Not open yet, but the lights were blazing. The shelves were well-stocked with Pocky. The coolers filled with bottled green tea. There was a wet-dry vac sitting ready to clean the floor. The only thing missing were the sushi and panini sandwiches in the gondola cooler.

This could easily be open in a day or two with just a final going over by the staff. When will it open??? This puts the lie to the skeptical commenter some time back who doubted they could open so many locations by year's end.

I'm ready for my Pocky!

Blogdowntown has more info on the 6th and Olive Famima!! and a new Starbucks at Elleven. The chains are running wild in Downtown.

Famima!! put two stores within five blocks of one another. Do they think they're in Tokyo or something?

Speaking of which, is Famima!! coming to Little Tokyo?

I will be visiting the 8th and Fig location on an almost daily basis. Their pork dumplings rock. YAY for Famima!! ( although I kinda hate those 2 exclamation points after their name).

The downtown Famimas will mostly serve the office worker lunch trade. Nobody's going to walk from 6th and Olive to 8th and Figueroa for lunch.

its not that long of a walk.

Seventh, Wilshire, Sixth, Flower, Hope, Grand, Olive. A long way to go for Pocky sticks, particularly if you're in the California Plaza or somewhere to the East of the Sixth and Olive. Actually, the two locations are at opposite corners of the highest concentration of offices, and each is relatively close to a high concentration of lofts/apartments.

I'll walk at least 5 blocky for Pocky.

There's a brand new Famima on Colorado near the Laemmele Playhouse 7 in Pasadena too. No more stale poporn and stinky Nestle concessions. Choco-covered puffed wheat, spicy shrimp inari, green tea drinks and hot curry frybread go smashingly with arthouse fare. (Mind you the Playhouse sometimes sells great homemade gelato in the lobby too.)

Mr. Fiore, I hadn't thought about that, but you're quite right.

Perhaps Famima!! should also put a location in the pitiful Los Angeles Mall, so the massive horde of government employees in the Civic Center area can get in on the overpriced kitschy goodness.

I just came back from an LA Kings game at the Staples thingy. Walked by the Famina store on Fig. Yup, there's a bunch of Asian dudes inside, waiting about at the tables, looking as it they just finished an exhausting day of...er..."stocking" items. Cheesy 8.5x11 colored paper taped onto the windows, stating that Famina will open on the 31st. I wonder....does that mean "midnight", a la a new Guns 'n' Roses album release back in the 90's? Or will they just simply crack open the vault at 9 AM like normal people? Mebbe I'll stroll by on my lunch hour tomorrow.

The 6th/Olive location is five blocks from my living quarters.

The 8th/Figueroa location is ten blocks from my living quarters.

Until the second location opens, I WILL walk the extra mile (or so) to satisfy my Famima!! craving. Not every day, though.

Famima!! confirmed open at Fig location. Picked up some soggy pre-fab tempura for lunch today. I'll walk around or over Bunker Hill to lunch at Grand Central Market but likely will only run the 1 block to Famima!! if I'm in a wicked hurry.

A colleague and I visited Famima!! for its soft opening yesterday. It's fantastic, and it has the nicest flooring in all of downtown. I'm skeptical about the "downtown renaissasnce," but if Famima!! can put some of those crappy liquor/cigarette stores out of business, then my hopes will rise.

Everyone with an ounce of taste should frequent it.
