Since Saturday, we’ve told you about three new projects planned in the already booming Arts District, including a radical proposal for a development that would bring two skyscrapers to the neighborhood. Now we can tell you about a fourth project: a multi-use building with 218 live/work units that would sprout up off 5th and Alameda.
Plans were filed Wednesday for the project at 1100 East 5th Street. In addition to the housing, the building would hold 21,975 square feet of open space, including a gallery for residents, plus four bars and/or restaurants and 225 parking spaces for residents. Eleven percent of the live/work units would be earmarked for tenants with "very low" incomes.
By our count, this makes 21 projects proposed or underway in the Arts District right now.
According to the Downtown News, the 1.2-acre site on 5th is owned by Beverly Hills-based Maxxam Properties Inc., which scooped it up for $18 million in July 2015. The newspaper said that sale notched a record for the area for the price per square foot of land without any rights to develop it.
The plans filed today require a general plan amendment and zone change.
